…we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, whom the whole body, joined and knit together…promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love. Ephesians 4:15-16
Grow up! Often these words conjure up bad memories. Maybe a parent or an older sibling would use these words derogatively. But hearing these words doesn’t have to be a bad thing. I remember as a child experiencing so many times, the desire to grow up. Whenever it was my birthday, I couldn’t wait to be a year older. When my older sister was allowed to stay out later at night, I wished I could too. While I was in high school, I couldn’t wait to be old enough to graduate and head off to college. There is something to be said about growing up, being able to look back on what you used to be able to do and welcoming the ability to do something more, different, better. As Christians, we are reminded through the above words of God that we are called to grow up, to expand our hearts with the love of God and to extend our minds with the wisdom of God’s Word. What a wonderful thing it is for a Christian to “grow up” into Christ, our Head. This is something that every church member is called to embrace. And how do we do this? First and foremost, we accomplish this by engaging in study of God’s Word. Only as we learn more of what God tells us in the bible will we grow in the wisdom of the faith. Especially as we learn the words of Christ do we grow into more loving disciples. And in putting Jesus’ words into practice we grow into more faithful Christians. And when members of a church start to grow in wisdom and love, we as a church become stronger church. As we each grow in the faith, our church becomes more courageous and more compassionate in our witness to the world. This year, it is my hope that we will all take the next step in “growing up” into Jesus Christ, who has joined us together as His Church! God bless!
